"What business do I have writing a website?"
That might be what you're asking yourself as you read this page. After all, you're probably here just because it says DUH! on the menu bar and you were curious. But... Has it ever seemed to you like everybody has a website? Perhaps the question you should be asking yourself is, "Why don't I?" Some things I've noticed 1. I know writers and non-writers. Some of the non-writers write just as well as the writers...when they're writing about something they're passionate about. (See how amazingly my dietitian wife writes when she's writing about her favorite subject: nutrition!) 2. Working for others seems to be getting less rewarding. I'm lucky. I haven't had to work a regular 9 to 5 job in 20 years. But for the people who have, the workplace sure seems to be turning into a nastier place. And it seems to be getting harder to make ends meet. 3. More people are finding ways to work for themselves...or to supplement their income until they can work for themselves only. The reason? See #2. The ways? Infinite. I see: 4. One other thing I've noticed... The way most people spend most of their reading time these days is on the internet. That's why professionals in each of the fields listed above have found themselves writing a website. Do you know who decides what words get to be on the internet? It's not a book publisher. It's not a magazine publisher. It's not a radio station director. It's you. Whatever you want to write on the internet, you get to - that is, if you write a website of your own. You just have to know how. And it's not that hard. Whether you want to support an existing business, or start a work-for-yourself business from scratch, writing a website is within your capabilities. Here are some examples of others who have written a website and reaped the benefits. Where would you start? Start with what you're interested in. Start with what you know. Start with your passion. Or start with what you want to know. That's what I did with this website. I was a screenwriter, but I had a developing interest in children's books. I decided to take others along on my journey of discovery. And, as it turned out, I was able to make a few bucks on my journey, by creating this website. How do you like that? I basically got paid to learn! And... I learned something else too. I learned I could build a website. And how. I'll leave it at that for now If you're saying either of these things to yourself:
Then you owe it to yourself to do a little more research. Here's Site Build It!, the outfit I used to build this website, and here are the instructions I followed. (And heck - here's the video version!) (Site Build It also gets called Sitesell and SBI, so don't get confused.) If after you've done your research (bookmarkthis page) you have a question about my experience, please post it in the form below. I'll answer it right on this site! What do you want to know about writing a website?Don't be shy! I'll post your question about online writing, along with my answer, so everyone can learn from it! Not sure I see how it's such a great deal
