Three Gray Mice
by Christina Carpenter

Once upon a time there were three gray mice, Elizabeth Mouse, Evelyn Mouse and Emma Mouse. Elizabeth was a big mouse, Evelyn was a middle sized mouse and Emma was a little mouse. They loved cheese.

They wanted to eat the cheese in the kitchen, but the cabinet was guarded by a big black cat.

Emma Mouse went to get the cheese first.

“I see you little mouse,” said the big black cat.

“Please don’t eat me,” said Emma Mouse, “My sister is coming and she is bigger than me!”

“I will let you get your cheese then, and will wait for her,” said the big black cat.

Evelyn Mouse went to get the cheese next.

“I see you little mouse,” said the big black cat.

“Please don’t eat me,” said Evelyn Mouse, “My sister is coming and she is bigger than me!”

“I will let you get your cheese then, and will wait for her,” said the big black cat.

Elizabeth Mouse went to get the cheese next.

“I see you little mouse and I have been waiting all day to eat you,” said the big black cat.

“I see you too big black cat,” said Elizabeth Mouse, “but don’t eat me. I know where there is catnip for you.”

“Where?” asked the big black cat.

“Under the couch,” said Elizabeth Mouse, “Way under the couch by the wall.”

The big black cat left the kitchen. He went way under the couch by the wall. Only instead of catnip, he found a big mouse trap that snapped shut right on his nose.

The big black cat ran out of the house yowling.  The three gray mice enjoyed their cheese in peace and lived happily ever after.
