The Old Truck
by William Meeks
We had an old truck on the side of our house It didn’t run, didn’t roll, it was home to a mouse. Much more than a truck, it was to me A clubhouse, toy storage, a sanctuary I would start up the engine with a BRUMM BRUMM BRUMM Put it in gear and then it would hum. Step on the gas and the tires went SCREECH! I would have to stretch out my legs just to reach. Sometimes I did short trips to the store to the mall I would pick up my friends there was room for us all Left turns and right turns, I would drive all day long Turn up the radio I would sing all the songs. One day I drove to Florida, the other, Kalamazoo I even drove to England once, the truck could float too! Then during the trip the truck might break down I lifted the hood to take a look around All the wires and parts it looked like a mess Watch out for the part where the bees made their nest. Back on the road making good time Found a quarter a penny a sticky old dime I will never forget all the hours of fun And one day if I’m lucky, I get one that runs...
