Hi. My name is Susan Syddall and I live in Australia with my husband and our two young sons (currently aged 4 & 6 yrs old). I love reading children's stories with my sons. In fact, when we go to the local library, we don't take a library bag but a box on wheels as we can borrow more books that way.
As a teacher, I understand the importance of introducing children to quality books from an early age. When we foster a love of reading in children, we are equipping them for life as reading opens up an entire world of information and learning.
However, over the years, I've discovered that there are great children's books and then there are others that I often question how they were published in the first place because they are so poorly or inappropriately written. When it comes to books, I believe that we need to be selective in what we read. When we bring books into our home, we actually invite the authors to "speak" to our children. It's important to discover if what the authors have to say is appropriate and of value.
I have been a teacher for more years that I care to say (over 20) and hold a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) and a Masters of Education (TESOL). I've taught in Australia and in Hong Kong, set up and run a preschool and taught trainee teachers in a college. However, my most valuable experience is being "Mum" to our two energetic and curious boys as I've learnt an enormous amount by being a parent.
When I'm not homeschooling our two boys, I write and illustrate children's books (Visit me at Stories and Children.) The books I am currently writing are for children aged up to 8 years old who are embarking on the reading process. Now if there were only more hours in the day!
I am honoured and privileged to be part of the Best Children's Books team. While it is wonderful to be able to enjoy reading quality children's books with my children, it's a joy to be able to share and recommend great books with others as well.
