Success in publishing a book with my son

Coolhead Luke and Other Stories

Success in publishing a book with my son

POD with Booksurge, now Create Space

When my son was 10 years old, I noticed that his illustrations had taken on aspects of the bizarre. While gazing at one, a verse popped into my head.

This moment launched two children's poetry books, with original humorous poems that I wrote to accompany my son's many offbeat drawings.

We self published our books with a print on demand publisher and do our own marketing.

Although we have not sold millions, we consistently sell books both online and at signing appearances and our volume grows every year. We earn several thousand dollars per year and have lots of fun with this unique mother-son project!

Marketing Details
by: Anonymous

Steve,

Yes, I'd be happy to give you details of our marketing efforts. I'm a marketing consultant by trade, so these activities are within my skill set and were easy for me to carry out.

To promote our book, we created an interactive website at www.coolheadluke.com. We update it regularly with appearance dates and contests. We also have tabs for games and activities for kids as well as some product merchandising.

I've done a lot of social networking by contacting children's literature blogs where I've been invited to submit posts and articles. We've also received a number of written and blog radio interviews. We contacted various print and broadcast media and have gotten press on local TV stations and in parenting magazines. We've arranged for book giveaways on radio stations as well. We've also had many appearances and readings at book stores throughout the local area.

There are endless ways to promote a book. John Kremer's 1,001 Ways to Market Your Books is an excellent guide that I highly recommend!

Great marketing hook
by: Steve B. (webmaster)

Jennifer, I'm dying to know more (and I'm sure everyone else is too). A mother/son book is an inspirational notion and compelling as well. Can you tell us more about your successful marketing efforts?
