Smooth Sailing so far.

by Marie Dockery
(Douglasville, Ga. USA)

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Print on demand by Xulon Press

The name of my book is "The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Three Little Souls.

It is available at amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com

My book was released by the publisher on Sept. 10, 2008

The publisher has been great to work with.

They helped me to get in touch with a wonderful illustrator.

One reason I chose Xulon is because it is a publisher of Christian books.

My book is a children's Christian book. I wrote these two tales many years ago, and friends had advised me to publish them. The religious-themed tales were written so children could more easily relate to and grasp the truths of Christian salvation.

The cost was a little more than I wanted to pay out, but thought maybe I could possibly break even. I chose the more expensive of the three choices offered by Xulon because I thought they would help me to market it. However, they keep sending me costly information on how to market it.

I keep trying to get the word out via friends, relatives and the internet.

Thank you Steve B
by: Marie Dockery

You are right about the title. I am going to try to get it change before the next printing.

According to Xulon Press, it takes about two months to get
the image on Amazon. My book has only be out since Sept. 10.

Thanks again for your advice about the internet. I may try it too.

Still some work to do!
by: Steve B. (webmaster)

Hi Marie!

I have to tell you, it wasn't until I visited your Xulon Press page that I realized your book contains two stories. At first I thought that the three billy goats were finding Jesus AND finding the three little souls.

Precision is SO important in writing. I wonder what your book cover could say to make things clearer. Perhaps

Two Stories:
The Three Little Souls

and

The Three Billy Goats Gruff Find Jesus

I'll bet Xulon could help if you made them aware of the problem.

Regarding "getting the word out," I find myself reminded of something I've learned in trying to sell my own books: most people don't buy most things.

It's true! When was the last time you went to the store and bought MOST of the stuff in it? Relatedly, when presented with a product, most people don't buy it.

My point is that book sales are a numbers game. If you rely on family and friends, you'll inevitably have few sales. That's why so many self published authors try to expand their network.

Take me. I'm kind of shy. When I hear about the self publishers who just keep making calls and self promoting face to face, well, I'm in awe of them, because I couldn't do it.

That's why I chose the internet to expand my reach. And it's working! Last month this site was visited 25,000 times, almost all of them folks who I've never heard of and who had never heard of me!

Now, you don't have a site, and I'm not going to suggest that if you buy a domain name and slap a few pages up on the internet that you'll have 25,000 visitors every month.

You'll probably have more like 2 visitors.

No, building an audience via the internet is like anything else: hard. Hard, but not expensive (provided you do it yourself with a company that shows you how).

If you're interested, here's how I did it myself.

And one other thought: please do yourself a favor and get an image of your book to Amazon. It really dresses up their ads!
