My name is Shannon Duncan. I am a young South African, passionate about
My life is full of children as I do community children's work and assist with the home education of my two adopted siblings.
I read my first book when I was 3 years old, and I was hooked. My home education gave me plenty of time and opportunity to get my hands on good books. My school days were filled with hand-picked award-winners and I just couldn't get enough of them!
The local library was my favourite spot in the world, where I won prizes in their reading competitions. I even chose to spend my birthday at the library one year!
Although I read mostly on my Kindle now, I doubt that I will ever be able to get the smell and feel of “real” books out of my system. To open a new book is the best way to delight a young mind.
I enjoy books that have rich historical settings, such as Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw and I, Juan de Pareja by Elizabeth Borton de Trevino, and characters that are real and detailed, such as those in Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher and in Heidi by Johanna Spyri. I also like books that are unique, about unusual subjects, places or people, such as Snowflake by Paul Gallico.
I am privileged to have this opportunity to share the books I love with you, and I hope that you in turn will share them with the special children in your lives.
