Self Publishing Without Fear

The Comfort of Self Publishing. Fear Dispelled....

I did it. I did self publish my book and I have actually sold copies of it. This is a rewarding pursuit, but a very self examining ego crusher too.

I used a local printer that gave me a great price for the number of copies I printed. All printed in the USA for those who want to buy American.

(This is a wonderful site and I want to thank you for giving me this opportunity to tell my story, and maybe inspire someone else to write their inner thoughts and to entertain us all.)

The idea came to me one night or day. I am not sure exactly but I realized that what my wife and I had accomplished was nothing short of ingenious. We got our two little daughters to go to bed and stay asleep all night long.

You see my girls, who ages were 4 to 7 years old, would always, and I mean always, give us trouble going to sleep at night. They would come up with all sort of excuses. If you are a parent I am sure you may have had this same problem, "Mommy, I want a drink of water", "Mommy I can't sleep there is noices in my room", "Mommy, I am scared", and the old stand by is, Mommy, I have to go to the bathroom" and "I want a drink of water".

We fought this for weeks and months. We tried every thing logical to explain what and how and even who these little things that bothered them were in their rooms once the lights were turned off.

Some thought was involved in all this for sometime, but once I fought these imaginary scarey things with imagination, and on their level of understanding, it was just a snap to get them to sleep all night.

So after I was successful in this I decided to put my story of this powerful imagination to paper and write this book and maybe I could help some other parent or parents to solve this problem also.

So I did, I wrote the story, I found a local college student in art class and she did the illistration for my book, as I can't draw anything but a slick figure. I paid her for her time and creation.

She made the Creatures and pictures, then we combined them to the story book. I then had to have it edited.

OH... the editor... Let me tell you if you get a good editor you will come out of it feeling like you are the worse writer in the word. This is where the writer has to have a thick skin. Take the changes and strikes out of the book with the grain of salt. Do make the changes and do follow their advice. But remember what your goals are in writing your book. If you self publish you then are the publisher and you can decide if the editor is correct or not. Good luck on this one.

Now you should be ready to print. But before your print or publish you will need a ISBN number so get it. The ISBN number is your ticket to open the doors to selling books on the open market. Google ISBN to find out more info.

Once this is done find a printer and print the book and pay the printer. A good printer will assemble the book and bind it for you.

Ok that is it.. now after all that is done marketing your book is the next step for self publisher. Sites like this one will help you a lot.

Thank you for you time in reading this an hope you will at least see my website as it is always changing with something new on it. I have marketed it as N. Squared Publishing.

I would like to do what you are doing
by: Patricia

Hi Steve,
I just self-published and ordered my first children's book through the internet. It is about my one yr.old grandaughter whose sleep issues were solved by a teddy bear. I market-tested it with a Grade 3 class who loved & related to it. Fortunately, I am a professional photographer and a graduate of Advertising & Design so the book was lavishly illustrated with photo-illustrations. I have sent it out to friends by e-mail, but don't know how to go about marketing & selling it over the web. Your results are impressive! pgrichen@hotmail.com for any advise. Thanks,Patricia

Books that help with behaviors
by: Steve B. (webmaster)

Nick, it's especially interesting to me what you've done.

Bibliotherapy, the use of books to help children with problems they're having, is a major focus of this site. (The bibliotherapy section.)

Also, you'll note that - like you - I've self published my own bibliotherapy as well!

You'll see that I've taken an entirely different approach. For one thing, I've foregone the cost of an illustrator; I'm leaving it to the kids to illustrate! For another, I'm (at least at present) only selling the books electronically. Lower costs, less headache.

I'm also relying on the Web to bring me my customers. To tell the truth, the whole purpose of this site was to attract traffic for my bibliotherapy books! By creating a site of general interest to parents (i.e. it's about MORE than just my books), the search engines reward me with tons of visitors. (About 50,000/month as of March, 2010.)

Different people, different approaches. Since I'm not comfortable going out to hawk my work, this way works for me. Here's hoping your way works for you!
