The 12 Days of Christmas Giving
Publishing by others, for hire or by yourself: either way, it's always up to YOU.
I self published the old fashioned way, 10 years ago, with an inventory of 5,000 books (two titles, 10,000 total) that I had to warehouse, take orders for, and act as my own publishing house. I divorced and moved...the books went with me. Stuff happens...as it will to you!
For the first book, I used a local printer in the town where I lived. A graphics designer was hired, and the entire operation was up to ME.
For the second, I was HIRED to write the history for a book of artists' work. They went out of business, and I cannot get copies readily.
For what I'm working on now, the Christmas book, I did all the illustrations, the writing, then sent the package to a POD. The December deadline was not met, so the roll-out will be focused on this coming Christmas.
But overall, the experience has been positive.Planning Christmas in July
So it is JULY and I am planning the tour myself, planning book signings, contacting other authors and booksellers for MY own book.
The book for hire, I did the same thing. The publisher was counting on the artists to sell them. I organized the artists, created signings and events, but never even met the publishers.
So I have done it all three ways. I will let you know in December just how successful it has been, but the great news is, I don't have warehouses, I set my own price, they registered my ISBN's for me, and all I have to do is generate sales.
The first books? They are all useless and dated. (I do sometimes consider updating them and scanning them to POD to give them a new life with my new married name.)
The second books were not POD. They were a first run and are basically OUT OF MY CONTROL. They were beautiful hard back books with illustrations from over 50 local artists.
This new book is in cyberspace. It is available for print orders on any book seller's website. It is up to ME to promote it, but for a fee I can have them sell it.
"THAT IS WHAT I KNOW" :)
Publishing in any fashion involves effort on the part of the author. I feel best about my POD project. And I am looking forward to publishing digitally. The 12 Days of Christmas Giving
