There's a great Los Angeles store called Storyopolis, which also has a website. Their brilliant approach to personalized children's books is a basket of books customized to a child's interests and age, with a few more knick-knacks thrown in to keep with the chosen theme.

Now you can go the Storyopolis route, or - hold on, I'm having a brainstorm - you could make your own story basket!

Locate a basket, get some books on a theme, throw in some knick-knacks, decorate accordingly, and...voila! A truly personalized children's book basket for your child that will probably go over better and come cheaper.

As you've probably gathered, I'm a believer in Do It Yourself. Growing up, my mom taught me that a homemade gift always has more meaning than a store-bought one. I'm afraid I still believe that.
