Old Style Fairytale/Fantasy Illustration
(Marlborough MA USA)
Experience Alan's visions.
My style is fairytale/fantasy, old school style.
I work in both color - watercolor and acrylic - and pen and ink, as well as pastel and color pencil. I also make use of the airbrush.
I have published my illustrations many times. I did much work for The Dragon magazine as well as Science and Children.
I’ve done magazine covers, interiors, calendars, a book cover, several interiors for a book of poetry entitled Whispers, as well as the art for Heron on the Lake. But I have always been fascinated with the fairytale style of illustration.
I first became truly aware of it in books illustrated by Arthur Rackham – the first artist to illustrate Shakespeare.
Fairytale imagery is a unique way of seeing life, as are fairytale texts themselves.
But illustrations add such an essential element to that world, such that - after seeing an illustration of a dragon, princess, castle, or troll - as you read the rest of the book, those images stay with you, and every word hangs on the illustrations that first described them.
I had a business, from 1986 - 2008, which took a lot of time and effort - building models, sets, props, and special effects for the advertising industry. The work grew from my love of the fantasy world, and I served the markets that offered it readily.
I opened my website last year and have resurrected my illustrating talents once again to market them in this current artistic climate, where fantasy has risen again to become a truly appreciated art form.
I would love to work on your children’s fairytale/fantasy, book cover to cover. Please visit my website, Old English Alan, to see more of my work.
