Newbery Award Winners Medal Winners and Honor Books
Let's hear it for the Newbery Award!(Click directly to the Newbery Award Winners.) The Newbery Medal is awarded each year by the Association for Library Service to Children (a division of the American Library Association) to the author of that year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." And just to make sure that we get enough great reading material, the ALSC gives the Newbery Honor to a number of other great books by great authors, the ones that almost won! The Newbery Awards are generally given to authors of longer works. In other words, for a picture book to receive recognition is rare. (But it happens! If you want a list of top picture books, visit our Caldecott Award page.) The Newbery dates from 1922, and I try to maintain a complete list. (If I ever neglected to update the list, please contact me!) When a Newbery Award book (both Newbery Medal winners and Newbery Honor books - the best of the rest!) below appears as a link, that means that it's been reviewed on this site. 2003 Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi 2002 A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park 2001 A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck 2000 Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis Newbery Award Winners of the 1990's1999 Holes by Louis Sachar - This deceptively complex and yet easy to read book is high on humor. Konigsburg 1996 The Midwife's Apprentice by Karen Cushman 1995 Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech - A road trip book about a girl who, along with her zany grandparents, tries to find the mother who left her. Funny, heartfelt and tearjerking, a book very much about learning empathy.
1994 The Giver by Lois Lowry - A futuristic novel about an emotionally stifling future, from the viewpoint of a boy chosen to be different in a world of uniformity.
1993 Missing May by Cynthia Rylant 1992 Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor 1991 Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli 1990 Number the Stars by Lois Lowry - Danish resistance to the Nazis is examined in this tale of a family that takes in their daughter's Jewish friend.
