The Small Little Dog
Who Was Afraid to Play

by Kristina Samuelson

dog looking out

In a small little town not far from here lived a small little dog in a small little house. She was a sad, small little dog because she was afraid to go out and play.

For what if the wind came and blew her away? Or what if the rains came and carried her away? And into the snow she was afraid to go.

So she stayed inside, the small little dog in her small little house in the small little town.

Then one day, her neighbor, a big fluffy dog, knocked at her door. She asked, “Why don’t you come out and play?” But the small little dog cried, “I can’t go out and play. What if the wind blows me away?”

So the big fluffy dog went and played. But the wind did not blow and the small little dog stayed inside.

The next day, the big fluffy dog arrived again and cried, “Why don’t you come out and play on this beautiful day?” But the small little dog only replied, “I can’t go out and play. What if the rains come and carry me away?”

So the big fluffy dog went and played. But the rains did not come and the small little dog stayed inside.

Another day passed and the big fluffy dog arrived, she pleaded with the small little dog. “Surely today is the day. Please come out and play!” The small little dog only shook her head and cried. “I can’t go out and play. What if it snows and away I go?”

So the big fluffy dog went and played. But the snow did not come and the small little dog stayed inside.

The small little dog watched from her window as the big fluffy dog and her friends played. It did not matter if the wind blew or the rains came, for they played just the same.

They flew kites in the wind and splashed in the puddles, and did you know they even played in the snow?

As the small little dog watched she thought, “Look at all the fun! Maybe I should I go out and play?” So she decided when the big fluffy dog came and asked her to come out and play, she would go.

So the small little dog sat by her house waiting for the big fluffy dog. She waited in the wind and she waited in the rain and she even dared to go out in the snow. But the big fluffy dog never came.

The small little dog began to cry “Oh I am a silly little dog, why didn’t I go out and play?”

But the big fluffy dog heard the small little dog’s cry and asked “Why don’t you come out and play? It’s a beautiful day!”

And so my friends, she played in the wind, and she played in the rain, and did you know, she even played in the snow? That is the story of the small little dog in her small little house in the small little town.

The End
