Life is short! Make your dreams come true and inspire people of all ages!

by Julie Fox
(RI, US)

Ugly as a Toad!

Ugly as a Toad!

I am the self published author of Ugly as a Toad, a well loved children's picture book. I published through authorhouse publishing company.

I have always wanted to be a writer! Actually, I have always been a writer, and really wanted to see my work in a book like many, more than you realize!

So I did it! I wrote a story that was fun, had educational teaching components (I am also a teacher) and had the message to love yourself just the way you are!

Then I published! It was very exciting! I couldn't wait, I had to keep reminding myself that patience is a virtue! It was uplifting to see a dream coming true one piece at a time!

Then, wahlah! Product in hand! Let the fun begin! This was not what I expected, but even better. I did not become an author to get rich, and this will make a difference, because a few months later I am still not rich, but I am getting emails to do conferences, shows, book signings, and schools are giving me tables at bazaars for donating books. Other writers are asking my thoughts and for information on the process. I am making tons of contacts and really great friends. What an experience! This is really fun!

Your enthusiasm for self publishing is contagious!
by: Steve B. (webmaster)

(Or at least very noticeable!)

Julie, I'm thrilled that you're thrilled. What I wish is that you could give us a little more detail about how you went about publishing your book and what you're doing to get so much positive attention for it.

(Reply by commenting, if you would!)

Now, I've taken a look at your site, as well as your authorhouse page. I take note that you're a teacher, and that you see the book being used as a teaching tool.

Here's what I'm getting at: there's little on your site to draw attention from the search engines. Unless someone is looking specifically for you or your book, you're not likely to be found.

Can you change that? I think you can.

It would involve writing some pages that speak to the practical uses of your book. As you state at authorhouse, Ugly as a Toad is good for teaching

idioms
narrative elements
fact vs. opinion
sequencing
friendship
self esteem

Those are great starting points. You see, websites get found when

a) searchers are searching for the specific information the website contains, and
b) a page on the site focuses specifically on that information.

Now, your site isn't going to be found for a search on children's books. There are too many other books (and sites) out there. Even this site, with its HUNDREDS of pages, doesn't turn up on Google's first page.

But "teaching idioms." You have a chance to rank!

(Now, I'm speaking specifically to your situation, but what I'm saying applies to any author.)

Google "Children's Books." Not even J.K. Rowling shows up on the first page of results. Search "Books about Wizards" however...

Do you see my point? Market your book on the web not by using your name or the book's title, but by imagining what would draw your audience to this particular book.

As a teacher, you've got a leg up in this regard, because your book is meant to teach. Write new web pages about those subjects and how your book can be used to teach those subjects, and you're bound to get at least a little more traffic.

Interested in a little more attention? Visit here. Open up the tool they describe and select KEYWORDS/Brainstorming. Lots of resources to find out what people search for on the web that relates to your book.

A search is a query. Write the best answer, and you'll get some traffic!
