Meet J. Anne Huss

J. Anne Huss is a scientist and a homeschooling mom - she even has her own homeschooling site! She loves the classics, and science fiction as well. She believes in well-read parents: grown-ups with a big reading base are the best equipped to recommend just the right book for their kids!

J. Anne Huss in her own words

Reading has been a passion of mine since I was in kindergarten. I can clearly remember my early feelings about books and how much I enjoyed being swept up in the stories. I devoured every word Judy Blume ever wrote, longing to be Sheila the Great, obsessed over Alec Ramsey and his magnificent Black Stallion, and read Jack London over and over again until I was White Fang!

When I started homeschooling my children almost 8 years ago one of the first things I looked forward to was teaching literature to my then junior high aged daughter. We poured through some of the best classics ever written. When we read To Kill a Mockingbird she was enamored with Scout. Olan’s pain at losing her pearl in The Good Earth became her pain, and the fate of Piggy from the Lord of the Flies was a sad indicator of more savage acts to come.

I was just beginning to teach my son to read back then but now he is a 6th grader who needs some prodding to give up the X-Box and hit the books. That’s why this year I hand picked novels that a boy couldn’t help but love, like Where the Red Fern Grows, The Call of the Wild, and Tom Sawyer. I have never seen my son so thrilled with reading than I have in recent months, which just goes to show you – a carefully chosen book can change the minds and lives of young people!

Being a scientist myself, it should come to no surprise that science fiction is my personal favorite as far as genre goes and I am looking forward to incorporating more of these novels in my own homeschooling curriculum, as well as my future reviews at Best Children's Books.

It has been a fantastically fulfilling experience to watch my children become involved with the characters of some of the best books ever written and that is why I decided to become a book reviewer. As a homeschool mom I am always looking for new ways to incorporate fun historical fiction and pop-fiction into our curriculum as well and I will be adding those picks throughout the year.
