I Wonder Why
by Laura Barnes
I wonder why the sky is blue, I told my teacher once. I wonder why sweet peas are green, I told my friends at lunch. I wonder why my dog can’t smile, I told my sister, Claire. I wonder, if there’s life in space, how did they get out there. I wonder, if the world is round, why don’t we just fall off. I wonder, when I have a cold, why do I sneeze and cough. I wonder if there’s pizza in China or Nepal. I wonder who has eaten the most pizza of all. I wonder how the clouds are formed and why some clouds are gray. And if I built a real big fan, could I make them blow away? I wonder how a camera works, and how a picture takes. I wonder if an elephant is ever scared of snakes. I wonder why your head is bald, I told my neighbor Ben. I wonder if I grow each day or only now and then. I wonder why I shiver when I’m scared or when I’m cold. I wonder what I’ll look like when I’m all grown up and old. I wonder why a kitten mews and why a baby cries. I wonder why a lion’s king and why an owl’s wise. I wonder what controls a car. What makes it go and stop? I wonder what’s controlling me. What makes me sit and stand and hop? I wonder this, I wonder that, I wonder all around. I wonder when I’m right side up and when I’m upside down. I wonder, if I wonder much, where my wondering will go. I wonder…oh, I wonder…and hope, someday, I’ll KNOW.
