Dr. Seuss's Fox in Socks

Children's book review by Steve Barancik

Ages 4-Adult

Tongue twisters kids will love. Grown-ups too!

You read your kids the wonderfully insane Green Eggs and Ham. You started them reading to themselves with Hop on Pop.

So you can't possibly deny them Fox in Socks. If Hop on Pop and Green Eggs and Ham had a child and that child went to Seussiversity, after he graduated he'd be this book! Fox is essentially Sam-I-Am with a taste for tongue twisters!

The front cover says,

This is a book you READ ALOUD to find out just how smart your tongue is... This Fox is a tricky fox. He'll try to get your tongue in trouble.

It starts out simply enough. We meet Fox and poor Mr. Knox. Fox wants Mr. Knox to "repeat after me." It starts out simply enough...

Knox in box.
Fox in socks

But before long we're at

Who sews whose socks?
Sue sews Sue's socks.

Who sees who sew
whose new socks, sir?
You see Sue sew
Sue's new socks, sir.

That's not easy,
Mr. Fox, sir.

I even have trouble typing it! But just wait until your kids get to the sentence that begins...

When a fox is in the bottle where the tweetle beetles battle with their paddles in a puddle on a noodle-eating poodle...

As Seuss asks at the end...

Now is your tongue numb? Review continues.

Peter Piper may have picked a peck of pickled peppers, but Fox saw "three free fleas" who flew "through three cheese trees" as the "freezy breeze" made them freeze.

Peter Piper was just a piker. (An amateur.)

Fox in Socks was one of the most popular books of the 20th century and still plenty popular today. Since 1965, generations of kids have been spraying spittle as they try to get their mouths around these alliterative rhymes.

These tongue twisters for kids take them back to the not-so-long-ago time when words were still hard to form, and that's just fun. It can be fun for adults too, and your kids will love seeing you struggle with the same words they do.

So give your kids a tongue twister text with Fox in Socks...in honor of Mr. Knox. And...
