Specializing in Fantasy and Sci-fi themes, characters, and environments

Preston Stone: Children's Book Illustrator Specializing in Fantasy and Sci-fi themes, characters, and environments
Colorful, exciting, and whimsical. These are the first three words that come to mind when I think about my art style, and I feel, the three most important when it comes to children's book illustrations.
The fourth word I think of is what makes me unique, that is "fantastical". My artistic passion is depicting scenery that doesn't exist in reality, and characters that one can only dream up.
Fantasy and Science Fiction themes are my specialty.
That said, if you have an average book with average characters, set in reality, you may want to ask another artist to illustrate for you.
If on the other hand you have a unique book with interesting characters (child with a super powered imagination, an alien race, a dragon-riding princess), set in a fantastic world (a dream-scape, outer space, or a fantasy world), then I'm the artist that'll put in the most creativity, effort, and life to your book.
I've been working as a general illustrator for nearly 3 years now. In the last year I have started to focus my expertise into Sci-fi/Fantasy Children's illustration due to my passion for the subject matter.
While I've been focusing the genre I work in, I've been broadening my media.
It's important for me to maintain a consistent portfolio, but I realize clients often want to emulate certain styles. With this in mind I became proficient with graphite, pen and ink, acrylics, watercolor/gouache, colored pencil, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator.
This way I can easily accommodate anybody wishing for a specific look.
I attended Aims Community College for three years where I graduated with an Associates of Liberal Arts, and a Videogame and Graphic Design Certificate.
My philosophy on my personal artistic ability has changed over the years, and at the beginning of 2010 I decided it isn't alright for me to be average, I have to be the absolute best at what I do. That is the reason I went back to school, transferring to the University of Northern Colorado where I'm currently in Pursuit of a Bachelors of Fine Art.
My fees vary by project and is negotiable. However, I would say that a "fair fee" would be in the $20-$25/hr range due to the infrequent nature of freelance illustration, the cost of materials, and the years of practice put into the skills involved.
Full page illustrations take me 6-20hrs to complete depending on the media used and the complexity of the image. I am more than willing to give any client a flat fee based on my estimate of the project time to completion if they desire.
If you're interested in me for your project, and would like me to "audition" with my artwork, I'm willing to work in whatever medium you request for one hour and send you the result.

Illustrations Inspiring Imagination

Illustrations that inspire imagination
I am an experienced illustrator and cartoonist that specializes in children's picture books. I have completed art for eight books, and have provided art for e-books, websites, educational media, and comic and editorial cartooning.
My illustrations begin as highly detailed pencil drawings that are scanned and colored using Photoshop, making them conveniently digital for easy transport.
When I work with a client, I always read through their manuscript and illustrator notes (if provided) and submit initial rough sketches that I submit for approval. Final color illustrations are also submitted for approval, and any modifications are applied before final submission.
My fees are flexible and can be discussed over email. I would also be happy to provide additional portfolio samples upon request.
Thanks! -Jessica Warrick

Fantastical Illustrations
by Rachel Cunningham
When You Wish Upon a Fish
Fantastical IllustrationsI recently graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a BFA in painting. However, I have been drawing since I was 2 years old, and I have always been fascinated by the relationship between image and story. I draw from tales I read as a kid or from stories in my own imagination, and I try to create a specific emotion or mood in the viewer. I work in a variety of media, specializing in - oil paints
- pastels
- colored pencil
- graphite, and
- pen drawings
I also have a basic proficiency in Photoshop. My work is often fantastical, sometimes surrealistic, but it also has a realistic edge. (I also enjoy working in cartoon and sometimes fuse the two styles into something I call "realistic cartoon.") However, I am flexible about subject matter and can adjust my style accordingly. My rates are negotiable/project dependent, so feel free to contact me to discuss projects or ask for preliminary sketches. You can view my other works and contact me at Cunninghamzter.com. I can honestly say I am passionate about art, I love stories, and combining the two has always been a childhood dream. I hope that my artwork can affect other people the way my favorite children's book illustrations influenced me as a child.
