We all speak a common language without even realizing it. The language? Fairy tale! We were raised on them. When I'm in a classroom and reference Goldilocks, I know all the kids are going to know who I'm talking about. When my job is to get them writing, I just have them tell the story of the day Rapunzel got a haircut, or how Little Red Riding Hood's broken leg and crutches effected her interactions with The Big Bad Wolf, and they're off and running! (We call this fracturing a fairy tale. I offer an entire fractured fairy tale writing package on the site. I fracture the story of The Three Little Pigs 44 different ways. It takes brainstorming to a whole new level.) Well, I just heard from someone else who puts our common language of fairy tale to use too. Molli Nickell runs the Get Published Now Online Academy, and she runs a contest most months for a free hour of her services. This month she's administering a synopsis contest. (Remember, those letters you send agents and publishers represent your writing as much as your real writing does!) This month Molli is inviting writers to submit a 300 page synopsis of a familiar fairy tale. Isn't that brilliant? When you synopsize an unfamiliar story, no one knows how accurately you've done it. But when you try to make a familiar fairy tale sound like a piece of writing that just HAS to be read, everybody can judge the quality of your abilities! The contest is free to enter.
