Not Too Serious: Children's Book Illustrator

by Laurence Knighton - designer/illustrator/writer

Not so scary monster under the bed

Not so scary monster under the bed

I was trained in the old school ways at a good school by some of the best, yet I just couldn't navigate well with more serious art. So, I migrated away from advertising design and illustration to writing and producing comic strip art and animation, finally settling on children's books. I've never looked back.

Seeking Illustrator for children's book.
by: Keith Garrick

Hello there,

My name is Keith Garrick and I am a self published children's ebook writer and illustrator. I'm working on a project that is just too darn cute for my drawing abilities.

The book is about 20 pages long. It features a little girl and her monster friend. The friend looks like a Koala bear but with candy cane shapped horns on its head.

I can do a rough copy of the book for you to follow. I just need the art work to be more cute. What are your ideas on price for this project ? Full color and all...

Thanks
Keith

JMV Illustrations - Jennifer Varn

Zsu Zsu's Big Fish Adventure

Zsu Zsu's Big Fish Adventure

I am a freelancer who has previously illustrated for books with adult themes, such as philosophy and women's health.

I am most excited about illustrating in the children's book field and look forward to welcoming opportunities that may come my way.

My style can be described as "loose" but still captures detail. My illustrations are created through a variety of mediums, mostly of acrylic, paper cut-outs, pastel, and matte-glue.

My work tends to be more on the realistic side and comes with luscious colors. I love color, and it should be no surprise that my illustrations are influenced by impressionistic color theories.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to see more samples.

Ms. Varn did work for me creating press for a dance production in 2007. Her work communicated pertinent information through exquisite visual design, wedding text and imagery seamlessly. Furthermore, Ms. Varn was efficient, professional, and extremely easy to work with. I recommend her most highly!

Painted look via Photoshop

Book Illustrator

In my sample I used a Photoshop technique to create a painted look. The effect looks quite nice in a children's book.

I can also hand-draw images for a raw illustrated look or do vectorized images in Illustrator.

I have an Associate's degree in Graphic Design and over 19 years experience illustrating and painting. I work with a lot of different media, but my favorites are Prismacolor, acrylic paints, graphite pencil, Photoshop and Illustrator.

My strength is in color illustration.

My fee is currently $50.00 for 1 page, $150.00 2-10 pages, $250.00 10-20 pages, $350.00 20-40 pages, $450.00 40 or more pages (depending on size of book or author's budget).

I can provide 1 sample sketch free of charge; for more the cost would be $10 per sketch.

Email me if you would like a bid on your next illustration project.

My Buddy the Monster

My Buddy the Monster

Timeless animation style

My work is bold and easily assimilated, which is to say, it's not so busy as to be, well, too busy. My work is easy on the eye, and very, very fun.

I employ the black lines and the bold, even colors of animated cartoons. This decades-old style has of course been proven consistently delightful. "If it ain't broke...."

My characters have warm, engaging faces, and I always employ a sense of perspective to give the pictures depth and invite the viewer inside.

Email Jim Taylor.

Chess People
by: Jo Belmont

We contacted Jim Taylor to design reproducible characterizations of the various pieces used on a Chess Board. We teach 4th to 6th grade students and needed the characters to typify the "power" of each piece.

Jim grasped the concept with a minimum of direction and nailed it on the very first draft of each and every character/chess piece. We couldn't have been more pleased. The kids were immediately drawn to them and played ever so much more now that their "men" had personalities.

Our jobs were instantly made easier via Jim's visual grasp of our intent. We couldn't have done better, and we appreciate being able to tell someone about him.
