Author-illustrator Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) wrote and illustrated children's books beginning with The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902, and five of her books were among the best selling children's books of the 20th century.

In 2006, her life was made into the critically acclaimed movie, Miss Potter Miss Potter aspired to be a scientist, developing her skills as an artist in order to depict what she saw under a microscope. Her accomplishments as a scientist were belittled due to her gender, though she received belated recognition after her death. Science's loss was children's literature's gain. Beatrix Potter's illustrations were as essential to her books' amazing success as the text. In 1903, Peter Rabbit became the world's first licensed character! The 23 books by Beatrix Potter were published between 1902 and 1930, and all appear to be in the public domain, i.e. copyright has expired. That means you can find all of the stories published legally online, including the five listed above on this site. The best way to experience Miss Potter's tales, however, are in book form.
