Cocoa the Adventurous Hamster

by Letitia West

hamster and cat

Cocoa is a brown and white fluffy hamster. He lives in a cage that has a wheel, a small orange hamster house, a water bottle and a red food bowl.

One night Cocoa was pacing up and down his cage as he was very bored. He had nothing to do.

“I’ll go on my hamster wheel.” he said to himself.

He ran over to his hamster wheel and looked at it. It was very big. He stepped inside and started to run and run and run. Soon he was running very fast, so fast that he flew out of the wheel to the floor of his cage!

Cocoa got up off the floor and shook himself. He looked around his cage for something else to do.

He ran over to his food bowl and looked inside. It was empty. He ran over to his water bottle which was also empty. What was Cocoa going to do?

Cocoa suddenly had an idea. He ran to the side of his cage where there was a gap in the cage bars. He started to squeeze through and through and through until he was almost out. Pop.

Cocoa flew free from the bars and-Crash! He landed head first on a plate that fell to the ground.

Cocoa was in the kitchen that had a large brown table, a huge black oven, a fridge and freezer. He ran to the other side of the kitchen as fast as he could. Cocoa was very excited. He was free to do what he liked!

Cocoa started to climb up the table leg. His claws dug into the wood like grappling hooks.

On top of the table there was a bowl of all Cocoa’s favourite fruit. There were oranges, apples, cherries, bananas and kiwis. He raced over and started to munch away at the fruit getting juices all over him.

Cocoa was so busy eating the fruit that he did not notice the cat Whiskers come up behind him. Whiskers had white and grey fur and she had giant whiskers.

“Meow, what have we here?” Whiskers asked out load to herself. “A hamster out of his cage?”

Cocoa jumped out of his skin in fright. He turned around and saw Whiskers huge teeth and claws and started to panic. His ginger fur looked like fire and his paws were as big as Cocoa! He should never have left his cage. He ran to the edge of the table but Whiskers got there first. What was Cocoa going to do?

“You’re going to make a lovely supper.” Whiskers purred.

“Please don’t eat me! I’m no good, I don’t taste good.” Cocoa pleaded.

“I don’t think so hamster” Whisker cornered Cocoa when suddenly the light got switched on.

Cocoa’s owner Danny stood in the doorway. His ginger hair was all over the place and he rubbed his grey eyes. When he saw what happened he was shocked.

“Whiskers down.” He shouted and ran over and picked up Cocoa.

Cocoa was safe. He had learned his lesson. No matter how bored he was he would do what Danny said and not leave his cage on his own.

The End
